St Patrick’s Day weekend is my favorite weekend of the year. Not only do I absolutely love the holiday, but to me it is a signals of the arrival of spring. The days are getting longer and I’ve survived the annual ‘spring forward’ of Daylight Savings. The days are getting warmer as well. The heavy jackets are being retired until fall and it feels like a great burden has been lifted. Lexington is coming alive again and nobody is more excited than I am.
This is the time when the Rollergirls of Central Kentucky come out in all their glory. And this year, I was able to participate as part of the team. You see, I’ve been a huge ROCK fan for a long time and a fan of roller derby for even longer. Trying out for the team had become top priority on my bucket list. Being invited to join the team changed my life forever. But that’s a different story.
Every year on this weekend, two major events take place that ROCK loves to participate in. We proudly skate in the St Patrick’s Day parade, waving to all the festive Lexingtonians and sharing our home bout schedules with everyone who will take one. The Men’s and Junior’s teams join us and we all have a blast. Who wouldn’t, right? Sadly, this year we had to walk due to the rain, but we appreciate every single one of you that came to watch!
Then, to top the weekend off, we head on over to the Lexington Comic & Toy Convention. If you’ve never been, you should check it out at least once. It’s a great way to meet some really interesting people and you’ll probably see us there as well! It is a very welcoming crowd. If nothing else, you can drive past Triangle Park and see your share of X-Men, Avengers, and a whole bunch of other characters that you think you should know but can’t quite remember.
What’s next for ROCK in 2015? Our first home bout is a double header with the Men’s team on May 30 at the Lexington Convention Center, right where we had just made friends with a not-quite-as-young Anakin Skywalker. Until then, you can see us at events such as Thursday Night Live, the Night Market, and tailgating at Keeneland Racetrack. Of course, if you know of an event where you would like to see us, you can always give us a shout. We love trying new things and meeting new people!
